I’ve always had a soft spot for the Subaru’s – I learned to drive in my Mum’s wagon and my cheeky boyfriend convinced me to take it onto the local beach.
And I’ll admit the one thing that usually makes me smile is when an old favourite goes faster.
Yep, I’m looking forward to spending some time behind the wheel of the updated Subaru Outback. Apart from some nice little refresh updates, the big bonus is two all-new turbocharged variants – the AWD Sport XT and AWD Touring XT powered by a 2.4-litre direct-injection turbocharged Boxer engine, delivering more torque and greater braked towing capacity of 2,400kg.
Subaru promise me that I’ll be getting from 0 to 100 km/h over 20% faster than the 2.5L direct injection naturally aspirated option. Which hopefully translates to a nice zippy feel around town.
Outside, the dual tailpipes hint at the higher performance nature for the XT, with all models looking sportier with new 18″ wheel designs.

I think Mum’s wagon was pure vinyl – hot, sticky but practical. The latest Outback is just as practical but way more stylish and comfortable with synthetic-leather coated in outdoor adventure proof water repellant treatment.
And for that modern taste of luxury, top end models have a Nappa leather accent trim.
The latest Outback is also packed with better connectivity and technology updates – look out for our full review.
